Special Needs Parenting, What We Are Really Thinking

As I sit here to write this post, I realize how hard it really will be.  These are my thoughts, my emotions and right now they are safe. They are safe from criticism, judgment, stares, whispers, finger pointing, grieving, apologies and guilt.

I want to write this for many reasons, but the main reason is to help people understand who we really are.  For all of my peers in the special needs community, I think of you every minute of every day, I love you and you inspire me.  This post is not about recognition for what we do, this is to help you (our friends,  family, co-workers, therapist, teachers and doctors) understand who we REALLY are.  Why we did not call you back, why we forgot your birthday, why we showed up late for your event, why we just could not stop to say "hi", why we really had to cut you off mid sentence, why our hair is not always fixed or makeup on, why we always look disorganized, why we asked you for help, why you saw us holding back tears, why we really don't sweat the small stuff, and why you saw us smiling and laughing for no apparent reason.  These are not to be considered excuses, because we try, believe me we really really do try not to let our world interfere with your world.

First of all, WE MISS YOU...we miss you beyond measure.  It is incredibly difficult to put in to words how much we miss you.  We either miss you because you stopped coming around or we miss you because we are always out of time.

Second, we are strong but we are weak.  Today we can climb a mountain but tomorrow we will spend hours trying to get over a speed bump.  There will be days that we have worked all day teaching our child to do the most miniscule task, only to fail and try again tomorrow.  Then, just when we feel our prayers are going unanswered, we are feeling defeated, and we just don't know if we can stand in front of a light switch and say "on and off" or "up and down" over and over again all day that day....they do it.  They do  it all by themselves.  We are on top of the world, not because of what they did but because they learned.  Thank God they learned, and we taught them how to do one more thing. We rarely cry because we are always looking for a solution.  We rarely cry because we know we can tackle what ever is thrown our way.  When we do cry though, hear us and hold us, our heart truly is broken...but I promise you we will recover, we will stand strong, we are simply sad in that moment and we need to get it out.

Third, we are tired but we will never say it out loud.  Here is what our therapy month really looks like behind closed doors.  Physical Therapy times 8+, Occupational Therapy times 8+, Speech Therapy times 8+, Hippotherapy times 4+, 125 Vision therapy exercises, 55 Oral Motor Therapy exercises, 30+ Sessions of Flashcards, 200+ Reading exercises, 45 sessions to help support fine motor, 40 math sessions, 500 + processing activities and 40 sessions of music therapy.  Now the reason we don't complain...we know how hard our child works.  Our checklist is a cake walk considering what they have to do to learn.

Fourth, we really have researched it over and over and over.  We make decisions for special diets, special vitamins, special supplements based on our research and based on our child's behavior.  Our decisions are based on what our special needs child can or can not handle.  Emma really can not handle a lot of things.  She really can not process things, her body really does not work like our typical children's bodies.  Believe me it would be a lot easier to do it the "typical" way, but it is not what is best for our special needs child.  She needs her DHA, probiotics, enzymes, specially designed multi-vitamin and the rest of the long list of supplements.  She can not handle dairy, she can not handle gluten, she can not handle dyes.  She can not break down processed foods, she can not handle added hormones, antibodies and pesticides.  She can not handle most medications and go ahead and brace yourself...she can not handle most vaccinations.

Fifth, yes we really do know our child better than the doctors.  Physicians are trained to treat typical kids, they are not taught to treat my special needs child.  This is not their fault, I do not expect them to do all the research for my child.  We are blessed with an amazing genetics clinic and we have some very smart physicians that understand Down syndrome and how gene mutation works and what it does to the body.  When we have to go toe to toe with a physician to get what our child deserves, it is because we are the only voice that our child has.  We hate the words, "that is typical for Down syndrome" because we know that what is "typical" is not, it has simply become acceptable for most.  Doctors do not see our child all the time, they do not see the mottled skin, the constipation, the dry skin and hair, the brittle nails, the irritability and the hour to hour changes with our children.  We know her body inside and out.  We monitor her CBC, Iron, Vitamin A, D, C, B12, Folate, Zinc, Selenium, Copper, Iodine, Sodium, Calcium, Creatine, TSH, FT3, FT4, RT3, Homocystine, Lipid Panel, GABA, Glutamate, Dopamine, Cortisol levels and all of the other labs that we have so neatly charted on a spreadsheet that dates back to her birth. We will travel to different states and Skype with doctors and therapist to get the answers and guidance that we need.  We have searched and searched for the best, not the best for typical kids but the best for our special needs child.  We have spent endless hours building a team for our child, not just any team but a damn good team I must say.  To put it in perspective, consider someone telling you that your child is sick and there is nothing they or you can do to help them. Do you leave them in a corner and allow the sickness to penetrate their body and soul day in and day out, or do you search and search until someone helps you treat them?  We will turn over every stone and look around every corner and ask every question to find a solution.

Sixth, we look at things completely different than you.  We have to be hypersensitive to noise, texture, smell, taste, light, and many other things.  We know what concerns our child, we know what makes her scared, we know what is unhealthy for her brain.  You see my child twirling, tapping, staring and rocking and think nothing, while we know our child is stimming and attempting to go "inside" herself.  You see a child running up and down a hall, I see a child stimming on the lines or patterns that make up the wallpaper.  You see a child singing a repetitive sound and I hear a child getting unhealthy audio input.  You see our child running around having fun, I see a child fixating on a power outlet every time she passes it.  You see a child swinging and having fun, I see a child getting too much unhealthy peripheral input to her brain.  You see a crossed eye and assume she can't see, we see a muscle that needs to be strengthened.  You see a tongue that pops out every so often and we see a sign that more oral motor therapy is needed.  You see our child running across the play ground, we see her arms up and wide stance because her core muscles still need so much work and we try to make a mental note that her right foot is turning in again so we need to adjust those shoes.  You hear a little voice saying something, we hear words that lack articulation and know that we are working on it.  You see a cute pouty lip, we see that her sensory input has reached its boiling point and try to get prepared.  You see a child throwing a fit or yelling, I see a child that may have some other problems that I am not aware of.  Finally, you see her Down syndrome but we do not.

Seventh, she is not typical.  We do not wish for her to be typical, we would not change her for the world and we would not take away the Down syndrome if we could.  She was designed by God and she is exactly who she is suppose to be.

Eighth, our hearts really break daily because so many people just do not get "it".  When you are blessed with a special needs child there are a lot of things put into perspective.  As harsh as this may seem, this post is about honesty.  You find out who your friends are and you find out who your family is, and we have truly  been disappointed in both.  We have discovered who has real concern, real compassion and who does not.  We really do not worry about the small stuff.  We hear you complaining because the cashier is too slow, the kids is yelling in the restaurant, the guy got your order wrong, the long line in the store and so many other "wrongs" that you feel there is in the world.  We see people that may just be a little slower than us and we are more patient with them. We trust that God has us in traffic and in that long line because he has us exactly where he needs us to be at that moment in time.  Now with all that said, I am not angry with the people that I do not have patients with because I know that they are blind to it all just as I use to be.  At one time I did not understand how hurtful the "R" word really could be.  Three years later, it will stop me in my tracks and hurt me to my core.

Ninth, we are not big fans of the term "high functioning".  Imagine me walking up to your typical child and referring to them as "high or low functioning".  Our kids our doing good because they have worked very hard and we have worked very hard for them to succeed.  Typical children do good because they too have worked hard and you have worked hard with and for them.

Last, we are humbled daily.  We are blessed to have a child to hold, kiss and love.  We are blessed to have our child at home and not in the hospital.  We keep our thoughts inside because we know that we are one of the lucky ones.  We get to leave the hospital, we get to watch our child grow and progress.  We do not take for granted the fact that Emma can see, hear, feel, taste, smell, walk, talk, look us in the eyes, love us, eat, express emotion, learn, heal, grow, ask for help, live without daily pain, face minimal testing and procedures.  We pray for those that have a hill much steeper than ours.  We pray for people that just can not get the answers they are looking for.

As I said before, this is not about recognition for what we do, we do not see ourselves much different then the rest of the world of parents.  We simply have emotions that are very hard to explain.  Some of those are just part of being a parent to any child and some are because we are the parents of Emmalin.

O Sweet Lord through the intercession of St. Robert Bellarmine, I ask for your merciful hand to guide me with sacrificial love to raise my beautiful child of light, your perfect creation. Lord, help me to know that Your burden is light and Your yoke is easy as I care for my precious child whose humble soul shines with purity, beauty and the Love of God.

This Mother Tore Off Labels And Nurtured Her Son’s Hidden Genius

I just finished listening to this amazing story.  This is a great example of fighting for your child's abilities that you know as a parent they possess.  We have got to help people understand that a child that is "labeled" should not be forgotten and NEVER underestimated.  Be your child's voice, YOU were selected by God for a reason.  Dig in your heals, do your research, follow your instinct, DO NOT give up, DO NOT accept "that is normal for kids with....",.  You are strong, you are compassionate, you are a fighter, you are resilient, you are the parent of one amazing child that needs motivation to beat the odds and climb each mountain one step at a time.

By Stephanie Broadhurst/The Mother List

Here’s an incredible story about a mother who totally disregarded what experts said about her son and threw off the label that was slapped on him as a toddler. Instead, she followed her own instincts – with astounding results.

Kristine Barnett’s son Jacob was diagnosed with autism when he was 2, and doctors said he would never speak. She tried special education programs and therapies aimed at addressing his limitations. When teachers told her there was no hope, she rebelled and took her own path.

“A lot of people thought that I had lost my mind,” she recalls.
Instead of focusing on Jacob’s limitations, Kristine nurtured his interests. Now her 15-year-old son is on track to win a Nobel Prize for his work in theoretical physics.

Relying on the insights she developed at her in-home daycare, Kristine resolved to follow Jacob’s “spark” — his passionate interests. Why concentrate on what he couldn’t do? Why not focus on what he could? This philosophy, along with her belief in the power of childhood play, helped her son grow in incredible ways.
“He liked repetitive behaviors. He would play with a glass and look at the light, twisting it for hours on end. Instead of taking it away, I would give him 50 glasses, fill them with water at different levels and let him explore,” she says. “I surrounded him with whatever he loved.”

The more she did that, the more it worked. Then one night, as he was being tucked in, Jacob spoke. “It was like music … because everybody had said it was an impossible thing,” Kristine recalls.”I would tuck him in every night and say, ‘Goodnight, baby Jacob, you’re my baby angel, and I love you very much.’ One night he looked me straight in the eyes and said, ‘Night-night baby bagel.’ All along he must have thought I had been calling him a bagel!”
Jacob is now a student of theoretical physics at the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Ontario, with an IQ measured to be higher than Einstein’s.

Kristine chronicles her son’s incredible journey and breakthrough in her book “The Spark: A Mother’s Story of Nurturing, Genius, and Autism.”

When she talks to other moms who have children on the spectrum, ADHD, learning disorders, or other disabilities, she tells them: “It’s really important that when you have a label, you don’t let that label define you. What are your children good at? Let that define them. Create motivations that are self-driven. Let them pursue what they love.”

“As parents, we know in our hearts what our kids need,” she says, “and we need to trust that a little more. Even if that goes against what others are saying.”

Brain Development in Down Syndrome May Be Enhanced, Doctor Suggests

Emmalin is very excited with this latest article supporting our beliefs.

TUCSON, Ariz., March 3, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Genetic diseases are generally thought to be untreatable, but the underlying mechanisms are biochemical and thus can possibly be modified, writes Los Angeles obstetrician P.J. Baggot, M.D., in the spring issue of the Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons.
Down syndrome results from an extra copy of chromosome 21 (trisomy 21), and thus three copies of each gene instead of two. Either excess or deficiency of various factors can have a detrimental effect on brain development, which involves both proliferation of nerve cells and selective pruning.

Baggot provides three case reports of mothers who attempted to enhance their babies' brain development both before and after birth. They used nutritional supplements, including high-dose vitamins, and stimulation through music and reading aloud.
Four babies (one set of twins) were born lacking typical facial features of Down syndrome, despite confirmation of the diagnosis through chromosome typing.

Intellectual development far exceeded expectations. One child at 34 months met some speech milestones for four-year-olds. A video demonstrated a 17-month infant reading and responding with gestures. A second video showed a 23-month infant reading aloud from flash cards. A third video showed a newborn crawling on the third day of life. These achievements would be admirable in children without Down syndrome.

Previously, six randomized controlled trials showed no benefit from multivitamins in Down syndrome. However, treatments were limited in duration and given late in development; most had no patients under age five. According to Baggot's "five-square" developmental enhancement paradigm, it may have been too late.
"In development, timing is everything," Baggot writes. A valid treatment given too late may have no detectable effect. But correction of nutrient deficiencies earlier, even prior to conception, may have effects years or decades later. Intrauterine factors may have a bearing on adult diseases at ages 60 to 80.

There is now a mouse model for Down syndrome, Baggot writes. The Ts65Dn mouse is trisomic for most of the genes found on human chromosome 21. It has physiologic, anatomic, and functional impairments similar to those in human Down syndrome. Prenatal and postnatal biochemical treatment and environmental stimulation have led to behavioral and cognitive improvement, as well as brain growth and more neural connections.

The replication, survival, and organization of brain cells can be enhanced in many ways, Baggot concludes. "Case reports suggest that several nutrients and drugs are promising. Experiments with mouse models may lead to effective treatments. Proper timing of treatment is crucial."

Importantly, "better understanding of brain development could benefit all children, not just those with Down syndrome."

Homemade Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry Syrup

Elderberry is the fruit of the elder tree, and as a supplement it is often used for colds and flu.

Why do people take elderberry?

Elderberries contain natural substances called flavonoids. They seem to help reduce swelling, fight inflammation, and boost the immune system.
Studies have found that elderberry eases flu symptoms like fever, headache, sore throat, fatigue, cough, and body ache. The benefits seem to be greatest when started within 24 to 48 hours after the symptoms begin. One study found that elderberry could cut the duration of flu symptoms by more than 50%.
Lab studies have found that elderberry might be effective against H1N1, or swine flu.
A few studies have suggested that elderberry could help with bacterial sinus infections or bronchitis. More research needs to be done.
People use elderberry for high cholesterol, HIV, and many other conditions.

Where do I get it?

That is what brings me to this post.  After buying for a year I wanted to attempt to make it myself.  We use elderberry to help us stay healthy during cold and flu season.  If one of us start to feel ill I will up the daily dose from once a day to three times a day and my immune system really kicks into overdrive.  Again, I know exactly what is going in.

Ingredients:

2 cups dried elderberries
6 whole Chinese star anise
18 whole cloves
13 cups water
4 cups raw local honey
4 whole cinnamon sticks
1 ginger root (large or small is your choice, depending on how much you like ginger)

All of my ingredients come from Mountain Rose Herbs except for honey and ginger. https://www.mountainroseherbs.com/

Make sure you buy your honey local for added benefits.  Why local?  Taking a high-quality raw local honey for two months before allergy season can actually lessen your allergies. Bees carry the pollen that aggravates seasonal allergies, and some of that pollen becomes part of the honey. Consuming honey daily before allergy season can help your body grow accustomed to the pollen and immunize your body against it.

Thinly slice ginger and add to pot.

Add dried elderberries,

cinnamon sticks, star of anise,

and cloves.

Last add water and bring to a boil.  Lower to a simmer for 1 hour.
Cover pot with cracked lid.  I prop a wooden spoon under one side of my lid.  After one hour remove from heat and let steep for a bit.  It will become a wonderful deep purple.  I let mine sit for about 15 minutes.

Last run through a strainer to remove the solid ingredients.

With a candy thermometer allow to cool to 110 degrees.

Next add honey and stir until fully dissolved.

Here is my finished product.

We all take this daily.  When someone starts getting a sickness we will double and triple up on the dose.

I have had a lot of people that are interested in purchasing the Elderberry instead of making it themselves.

If you are interested in buying it directly from me please feel free to email me a tsambeau@yahoo.com.

8 oz bottle is $15.00
16 oz bottle is $25.00

Methylation and MTHFR

What is Methylation

Simply put, methylation is a chemical reaction that occurs in every cell and tissue in our body.  Chemically speaking, methylation is the process of adding methyl groups to a molecule.  (A methyl group is a chemical structure made of one carbon and three hydrogen atoms.)  Since methyl groups are chemically inert, adding them to a protein (the process of methylation) changes how that protein reacts to other substances in the body, thus affecting how that protein behaves.  Enzymes, hormones and even genes are proteins and the process of methylation affects them all.

In some way, methylation of proteins helps the body detoxify.  For example, the methylation process helps convert the toxic amino acid (homocysteine) into a beneficial amino acid (methionine).  If your body cannot methylate properly, toxins build up in your bloodstream and will eventually cause disease.

Another role of methylation is to help the enzymes in our bodies work efficiently.  Enzymes are proteins that act like switches for chemical reactions-they initiate very important processes in every cell and tissue.  In a similar way, methylation affects our genes, which are also made up of proteins.  In fact, methylation can turn genes on and off, which can be good or bad for our health, depending on the gene.

Some nutrients affect the process of methylation quite dramatically-methyl donors (nutrients like folate and choline) actually donate methyl groups to proteins and methylating factors (nutrients like vitamin B12 and zinc) helps this process along by monitoring specific methylation reactions.  how well your body "can methylate" is important to your overall health.

What is MTHFR and How is it Related to Methylation

MTHFR (methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) is an enzyme that converts folic acid into usable form that our bodies need.  It is a key enzyme in an important detoxification reaction in the body-one that converts homocysteine (toxic) to methionine (benign).  If this enzyme is impaired, this detoxification reaction is impaired, leading to high homocysteine blood levels.  homocysteine is abrasive to blood vessels, essentially scratching them, leaving damage that causes heart attacks, stroke, dementia and a host of other problems.

Additionally, when the enzyme MTHFR is impaired, other methylation reactions are compromised.  Some of these methylation reactions affect neurotransmitters, which is why impaired MTHFR activity is linked with depression.  Inefficiency of the MTHFR enzyme is also linked to migraines, autism, fertility, cancer and birth defects, all of which depend on proper methylation.

High levels of homocysteine can be attributed to many conditions such as:
*  The condition can lead to high rates of dementia /Alzheimer`s due to a decrease in vitamin B-12.
*  High homocysteinemia can lead to coronary artery disease, common carotid atherosclerosis other Vascular Diseases.
*  Complications in Pregnancy Due To Neural Tube Defects.
*  Atherosclerosis
*  Rheumatoid Arthritis
*  Downs Syndrome
*  Alcoholism
*  Osteoporosis
*  Neuropsychiatric Disorders
*  Non Insulin Dependant Diabetes
*  Early Pregnancy Loss
*  Spontaneous Abortion (Viable Fetus)
*  Placental Abruption, Low Birth Weight

What is the MTHFR?

There is a gene called the MTHFR gene that basically controls how well this enzyme works.  A simple blood test can tell you if you have variant copies of this gene.

There are over 50 known MTHFR variants, but the two prime variants are called 677 and 1298, the numbers refer to their location on the gene.  The routine lab test for MTHFR variant only reports on 677 and 1298 as these are the most studied.

The 677 variant is associated  with early heart disease and stroke and the 1298 variant with a variety chronic illnesses.  The MTHFR is reported out as heterozygous or homozygous.  If you are heterozygous you have one affected gene and one normal gene (could have come from either parent).    The MTHFR enzyme will run at about 55% to 70% efficiency compared to a normal MTHFR enzyme.  If you are homozygous then enzyme efficiency drops down to 7% to 10% of normal, which of course makes a huge difference."  Emmalin is homozygous as am I.  She got one copy from her father and one copy from me, just as I received one from each of my parents.

"The worst combination is 677/1298 in which you are heterozygous to both anomalies.  Many chronic illnesses are linked to this anomaly.  98% of autistic children have an MTHFR anomaly.  Fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome, migraines, are all conditions associated with MTHFR anomaly."
"MTHFR can make you susceptible to illness because the pathway is the primary source of glutathione production in the body.  Glutathione is the body's primary antioxidant and detoxifier.  People with MTHFR anomalies usually have low glutathione, which makes them more susceptible to stress and less tolerant to toxins."
"As we age MTHFR problems get much worse due to the accumulation of toxins and the cumulative effect of oxidative stress, which ages our bodies."

What kind of symptoms are associated with the MTHFR gene defects?

There are many different symptoms someone with one or both gene mutations might encounter.  Not everyone has the same set of symptoms because there are many other genetic and environmental differences that complicate health.  But if you boil it down, there is a key systemic problem that comes from low methylation and it causes three different symptom areas.

Systemic problem:  Homocysteine levels are too high due to the fact that not enough Methylfolate is available to convert the Homocysteine into Methionine, SAMe and Glutathione.  Think of Methylfolate (L-MTHF or 5-MTHF) as the wizard changing the bad guy (Homocysteine) into good guys (SAMe and Glutathione).

Three symptom areas:

    1.  Central Nervous System disorders - some of these come from Homocysteine not getting converted into SAMe.  SAMe is responsible for creating Serotonin, Dopamine, and Norepinephrine (neurotransmitters responsible for mood, motivation, and to some degree energy levels - if these are low, then Depression is often the result, but even aggression and alcoholism are symptoms sometimes found in men).  Pregnant women may encounter extreme Post-partum depression.  Also, things like Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Migraines, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), Memory loss with Alzheimer's and Dementia and other psychiatric problems can be tied to this issue (OCD, Bipolar, Schizophrenia, and more).  These challenges are typically more related to the 1298 gene mutation.  A very recent clinical trial (not even published yet) was done by Dr. Fava (July, 2011) showed that giving L-Methylfolate (Metafolin) found in the prescription 'medical food', Deplin, was as effective as the top anti-depressant drugs available today (and without all the side effects).

   2.  Cardiovascular problems often occur when Homocysteine levels in the body are too high.  Heart attack, Stroke, Blood clots, Peripheral neuropathy, Anemia even Miscarriages and Congenital birth defects can be related to this issue among others.  These problems are typically more related to the 677 gene mutation, but the worst is for a person who has one 677 variant and one 1298 variant.

    3.  Environmental poisoning can increase when not enough Homocysteine gets converted into Glutathione.  Glutathione is responsible for detoxifying the body of the heavy metals we encounter in the environment - it is our body's most powerful antioxidant.  When a body gets too burdened by heavy metals and toxins, a lot of unexpected health problems emerge.  Some symptoms of this can be: nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, liver and kidney dysfunction, hypertension, tachycardia, pulmonary fibrosis, asthma, immune problems, hair loss, rashes and more.

Sometimes diseases/disorders fall under a 'two-pronged' cause, meaning the causes of it stem from both genetic and environmental problems).  Autism is a big one that falls into this 'two-pronged' cause category [American Journal of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 2008] along with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and more.  MTHFR is at the top of a list of 16 genetic defects for autism.  Another study showed 98% of children with autism had one or both of the MTHFR gene defects (677 and/or 1298).  A recent clinical study indicated that mothers with MTHFR who didn't take folate during pregnancy were 7 times more likely to have an autistic child than mothers without the MTHFR gene defect [Epidemiology, July 2011, Vol. 22, Issue 4, pgs 476-485].  Colon and gastric cancers also have key links to the MTHFR gene defects, just do an internet search on 'MTHFR and colon cancer' or 'MTHFR and gastric cancer' and you will find many clinical studies and articles on the subject.

If I Have Variant Copies of the MTHFR Gene, What Can I Do?

If the MTHFR enzyme is inefficient, you can compensate for your body's inability to methylate efficiently since this biological process is dependent on several B vitamins.  You may simply need more B vitamins than someone without a variant copy of this gene, such as vitamin B6, B12 (methylcobalamin) and the active form of folate (5-methyl tetrahydrofolate).  Other methyl donors such as SAMe and trimethylglycine may also provide benefits.  If you have a defective copy of the MTHFT gene, it is important for you to monitor your homocysteine level as well.  Fortunately, lowering homocysteine can often be done with the nutrient supplements listed above.

Determining what copies of the MTHFR you have gives you the ability to compensate accordingly.  The old paradigm that we are simply a the mercy of our genes is now challenged.  Genetic testing empowers you to take control, launching you into a new age of truly individualized healthcare.

I knew the more I researched the more I would discover.  The deeper I looked I realized how hard Emmalin's little body really has to work.  As scared as some of this makes me, I thank God I know what to do to help my child be her best.  Now most of the stuff I was already doing with Emmalin so I only have to change up a few things.  I now know what multi-vitamins she can handle and which ones are toxic to her and me.  I have always been heavy on the B Vitamins but I did need to change her B12 vitamin based on this new information.

Why MTHFR Is Only A Part of Methylation
Here is the B Vitamin that we use currently.
And here is the vitamin we are switching too:
Please watch for my next post when I go into details about the lifestyle and dietary changes I have made for Emmalin and our family, now that we know each of us is affected by the MTHFR gene.

One Way to Get Supplement In

Emma's Morning Milk

Over the next few months I will be posting on this blog some of what I believe are the most important things that I add to Emma's daily diet.  From the very beginning we had to deal with reflux issues with Emma so there were some supplements that seemed to cause spit up for her.  One supplement that we continually had digestive issues with was Nutrivene D.  I attempted dosing every way possible but Emma just could not handle it.  I knew the importance of the Nutrivene so I began to look for ways to get other vitamins and minerals she needed through her food diet.  I will reintroduce Emma to Nutrivene later when I feel she may be able to handle it, but for now this is some of what we do:

First things first-we only use raw goat milk when available, if not we use store bought with Emma.  The proteins in cows milk are just too much for the belly and the dairy attributes to so many congestion problems.  You will not find a lot of medical people that will agree that milk = congestion, nor will you find studies that support it but I am here to tell you...when your child is miserable you will try anything and when we keep dairy out of Emma's diet, congestion and reflux are not an issue.  Our genetic doctors at Arkansas Children's Hospital also agree that eliminating dairy when congestion is an issue is the first step.  Not to mention the health benefits of goat milk greatly out weigh those of cow's milk.

Keeping Emma's nose clear of congestion has created a child that breaths through her nose and not her mouth.  There are so many pieces to our puzzle, some small and some big...this is a big part of our equation to success.

Next is flax seed oil for a variety of reasons.  First, flax is a great source of fiber. Most Americans do not get enough fiber in their diet. Each tablespoon of flax contains about 8 grams of fiber. This helps keep the bowels regular.

Second, flax is a plant source of omega-3. Once again, most Americans are short on their omega-3 fatty acids. These essential fatty acids ("essential" meaning they must be consumed because our bodies don’t make them) play an important role in the anti-inflammatory system of our body. Flax contains the shorter chain omega-3 called ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). Thus, it is not a replacement for fish or fish oil supplements that contain DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (ecosapentaenoic acid.)

Make sure that it has the "press date" shown to insure freshness.

Bernard Jensen's Rice Bran Complex is next on the list.   Rice bran complex is a concentrated combination of B-Vitamins which is easily absorbed into the body. These B-Vitamins work together to create a synergy to aid the conversion of food into energy, as well as help the nervous system recover from the effects of physical stress.  Each serving (15 ml) has 3 mg of Thiamin (B1), 187 mcg of Riboflavin (B-2), 53 mg of Niacin (B-3) and 50 mcg of Pryidoxine (B6).  I give Emma 5 ml with AM, Noon and PM cup of milk.

Then there is Bernard Jensen Black Cherry Concentrate Extra Quality.  It is thick, rich, and a good source of iron. It is made from the entire fruit including the skin and pit and it may be used as a sweetener. Although native to North America, wild cherry trees now grow in many other countries. The bark of the wild cherry tree is used for medicinal preparations. Wild cherry syrup has been used traditionally by herbalists to treat coughs and other lung problems. It has also been used to treat diarrhea and to relieve pain. Wild cherry tincture or syrup is sometimes recommended for coughs.

Then there is Liquid Vitamin C.  The whole family gets extra Vitamin C every day and Emma is no exception. Vitamin C is one of the safest and most effective nutrients, experts say. It may not be the cure for the common cold (though it's thought to help prevent more serious complications). But the benefits of vitamin C may include protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, eye disease, and even skin wrinkling.

A recent study published in Seminars in Preventive and Alternative Medicine that looked at over 100 studies over 10 years revealed a growing list of benefits of vitamin C.

"Vitamin C has received a great deal of attention, and with good reason. Higher blood levels of vitamin C may be the ideal nutrition marker for overall health," says study researcher Mark Moyad, MD, MPH, of the University of Michigan. "The more we study vitamin C, the better our understanding of how diverse it is in protecting our health, from cardiovascular, cancer, stroke, eye health [and]
immunity to living longer."

"But," Moyad notes, "the ideal dosage may be higher than the recommended dietary allowance."

How Much Vitamin C Is Enough?

Most of the studies Moyad and his colleagues examined used 500 daily milligrams of vitamin C to achieve health results. That's much higher than the RDA of 75-90 milligrams a day for adults. So unless you can eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, you may need to take a dietary supplement of vitamin C to gain all the benefits, Moyad says. He suggests taking 500 milligrams a day, in addition to eating five
servings of fruits and vegetables.

"It is just not practical for most people to consume the required servings of fruits and vegetables needed on a consistent basis, whereas taking a once-daily supplement is safe, effective, and easy to do," Moyad says. He also notes that only 10% to 20% of adults get the recommended nine servings of fruits and vegetables daily.

Moyad says there is no real downside to taking a 500-milligram supplement, except that some types may irritate the stomach. That's why he recommends taking a non-acidic, buffered form of the vitamin. "The safe upper limit for vitamin C is 2,000 milligrams a day, and there is a great track record with strong evidence that
taking 500 milligrams daily is safe," he says.

Then there is the wonderful Vitamin D supplement.  Again another one
that everyone in the family supplements.  We also supplement it higher than the RDA recommendation.  Especially during the winter months.

Vitamin D may actually be the more critical vitamin when it comes to fighting off colds. An important member of Dr. Oz's anti-aging checklist, vitamin D plays a number of roles in our bodies, including:
  • Promoting absorption of calcium and bone health
  • Boosting immune function
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Healthy neuro-muscular function
  • Protecting against some forms of cancer

For such an amazing nutrient, vitamin D doesn't always get the attention it deserves, perhaps because very few foods in nature contain vitamin D. The best sources are salmon, tuna and mackerel (especially the flesh) and fish liver oils. Beef liver, cheese and egg yolks also contain small amounts. If these foods don't sound very appealing to you, there is good news: you don't have to eat
vitamin D to make sure you're getting your daily dose! Vitamin D is actually produced in your body when ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike your skin. The UV rays trigger synthesis of vitamin D, which then gets converted in your liver into its active form.

This means one of the best ways to get vitamin D is to spend about 10-15 minutes a day outside in the sun. Keep in mind that wearing sunscreen will prevent you from getting adequate vitamin D outdoors. In the summertime, an easy solution is skipping sunscreen on your legs for the first 15 minutes in the sun. Just make sure you apply in time to prevent any burns or damage.

If this sounds complicated (or it's cloudy!), there's an even easier way to get your vitamin D: many foods in the American diet are fortified with this essential nutrient. In fact, fortified foods provide the majority of vitamin D in our diets. Almost all of the US milk supply is fortified with 100 units per cup - that's about 25% - 50% of the recommended daily dose! This means milk packs a double
punch for bone strength. Milk contains a good amount of calcium and the additional vitamin D to ensure that your body absorbs all that calcium.

So exactly how much Vitamin D should you aim for each day? For all ages, Dr. Oz recommends a daily dose of 400 IU (and perhaps even as high as 1000 IU).  Chad and I take 2000 IU and the kids are closer to the 1000 IU mark.

Sambucus Elderberry, Echinacea and Propolis for Kids is next.

Elderberry is a plant. The berries are used to make medicine. Do not confuse elderberry with American Elder, Elderflower, or Dwarf Elder.

Elderberry is used for “the flu” (influenza), H1N1 "swine" flu, HIV/AIDS, and boosting the immune system. It is also used for sinus pain, back and leg pain (sciatica), nerve pain (neuralgia), and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) .

Some people use elderberry for hay fever (allergic rhinitis), cancer, as a laxative for constipation, to increase urine flow, and to cause sweating.

Elderberry fruit is also used for making wine and as a food flavoring.

How does it work?

Elderberry might affect the immune system. Elderberry seems to have activity against viruses including the flu, and might reduce inflammation.

Then of course we use Children's DHA. DHA is required in high levels by the brain and retina as an essential nutrient to provide for optimal neuronal functioning (learning ability, mental development) and visual acuity.

Studies have been done on children with autism and with other developmental differences, and the results showed that after 3 months of taking DHA & EPA, there was a 6 month improvement in reading and spelling levels, as well as significant behavioral improvements.

http://downsyndromenewmama.blogspot.com/2010/03/supplementsdha-epa.html

DHA is another one the whole family supplements.
DHA is important for brain and eye development and function throughout the life stages, but is particularly important during the first two years of life and early childhood. Between birth and five years of age, the human brain increases approximately 3.5 times in mass. During this time it is important that children consume adequate amounts of DHA in their diet to support this period of rapid brain and eye growth and development.

DHA provides a number of important health benefits to children, including:
  • Supports normal cognitive function
  • Supports brain and eye development and function
  • Supports a healthy heart

Recently published research suggests that for children ages 7-9, who are under performing in reading showed improvement after adding DHA to their diet.  A healthy diet that achieves 600 mg of DHA daily may support improvements in reading, memory and behavior.

Why It's Important to Provide DHA for Your Children

American children consume an average of only 30 to 50mg of DHA per day. It’s no surprise that children consume less than optimal levels of DHA. Foods that naturally contain DHA are limited to organ meats and fatty fish, which are not commonly consumed by young children. In addition, picky and unbalanced eating habits, food allergies and a recent FDA warning for young children to limit consumption of certain types of fish due to concerns over high levels of mercury, make it difficult for parents to ensure their children are obtaining optimal levels of DHA.

Fortunately, as awareness of the importance of DHA continues to grow, more attention is being paid to the fact that young children may benefit from getting more DHA in their diets. A growing awareness of the dietary sources of DHA and the inclusion of DHA into follow-on formulas and certain fortified foods are making it easier for people of all ages, including young children, to obtain this important nutrient from their daily diets.

A fairly new one on our list is Black Cumin Seed Oil.  Black cumin is a part of the buttercup family and the seeds are dark, thin, and crescent-shaped when whole. The seeds have been used for many centuries in the Middle East, the Mediterranean and India. Today, black cumin seeds are used as a seasoning spice in different cuisines across the world due to their nutty flavor. Besides their culinary uses, black cumin seeds also have a wealth of important health benefits and are one of the most cherished medicinal seeds in history.

The seeds of the black cumin plant contain over 100 chemical compounds, including some yet to be identified. In addition to what is believed to be the primary active ingredient, crystalline nigellone, black cumin seeds contain: thymoquinone, beta sitosterol, myristic acid, palmitic acid, palmitoleic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, linolenic acid, arachidonic acid, protein, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, folic acid, calcium, iron, copper, zinc, and phosphorous.

Black cumin seeds have a particularly long and strong history of use in Egypt. When archaeologists found and examined the tomb of Egyptian boy-king Tutankhamen (King Tut), they found a bottle of black cumin oil, which suggested that it was believed to be needed in the afterlife.

Physicians to the Egyptian pharaohs frequently used the seeds after extravagant feasts to calm upset stomachs. They also used the seeds to treat headaches, toothaches, colds, and infections. Queen Nefertiti, renowned for her stunning beauty, used black seed oil, likely due to its abilities to strengthen and bring luster to hair and nails.

Hundreds of studies have been conducted on black cumin which have shown that compounds from the seeds help fight diseases by boosting the production of bone marrow, natural interferon, and immune cells.

Several of the studies have shown that black cumin seed extract could assist individuals with autoimmune disorders and could possibly help to fight cancer. One recent study on black cumin seed oil demonstrated that it was effective against pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest and most difficult to treat cancers.

I saved the best for last.  Some will disagree with this but it will continue to stay in Emma's daily diet for all of its benefits or until her doctors and nutritionist change their opinion of what is right for Emma.  Here is a good article regarding raw eggs:

The Health Benefits of Raw Eggs
By John Claydon D.Hom

The process of cooking eggs destroy the very goodness that our bodies so desperately need as the nature of proteins and fats is altered when exposed to heat. When cooked, the egg protein changes its chemical shape; it is often this process that can be the cause of allergies. Generally when eating raw eggs, any incidence of egg allergy will disappear.

Surprisingly, in spite of ‘bad press’ raw eggs, organic or at least from a known source of healthy free-range chickens, are an excellent health tonic. The regular consumption of raw eggs will do wonders for your overall health. Exceptionally easy to digest, raw eggs provide a wonderful boost to the immune system, and a completely balanced nutritional package. A good immune system is one of several things the body needs to overcome cancer.

Many people’s diets are deficient in high quality proteins and fats, and eggs are one the very best sources of these. Raw eggs have many benefits, they contain essential nutrients for the brain, nerves, glands and hormones, they are nutritionally balanced, and we highly recommend the addition of raw eggs to your nutritional program. The sulphur amino acids help to keep you young, raw eggs also contain an abundance of other vital substances including protein, essential fatty acids along with niacin, riboflavin, biotin, choline, vitamins A, D and E, magnesium, potassium, phosphorous, manganese, iron, iodine, copper, zinc and sulphur. Egg yolks are one of the few foods that contain vitamin D.

Poisoning from salmonella has been exaggerated in the past. A study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2002 indicated that only 2.3 million, of the 69 billion eggs produced annually, are contaminated with salmonella. In other words 0.003% or 1 in every 30,000 eggs. The bulk of these come from battery chicken eggs and chickens kept in unhealthy conditions - only sick chickens lay salmonella contaminated eggs. If only healthy chicken eggs (organic and free range ideally) are consumed, then far less than one in 30,000 eggs are contaminated. Salmonella is a common micro-organism found almost everywhere, and is just as likely, or more likely, to proliferate on cooked food kept in the fridge. Infection is normally mild gastric symptoms, but in rare cases where the immune system is very low such in the elderly who have had much anti-biotic use, and the source is greatly contaminated, death can result. But such a person is highly likely to contract one of many common micro-organisms and die from that. To give some perspective, in the highly unusual situation of contracting Salmonella, in a healthy person, an infection is nothing to worry about and is easily treated with high quality pro-biotics every half an hour until you feel better.

Now I know that it seems overwhelming but it is not.  I mix it up the night before and put it in our magic  bullet (my favorite thing in our kitchen).

I keep a laminated index card that has the ingredients to different things that I make for the family.  I have Emma's milk, our smoothies and thermocereal.  Each night I make Emma's milk and our smoothies and put them in the refrigerator.  When we wake up in the morning all we have to do is blend and off we go.

Please know that this is what WE do.  There are some things that I do with Emma that Robin does not do with Presley and vice versa.  All of our children are individuals and need different things.  This, in my opinion, is what Emma needs.  I have discussed this with her doctors and nutritionist and they too agree with her diet-every part of it. They may not all promote this diet for everyone, but support this diet for what it is...Emma's diet.  Please research what is right for YOUR child.

Below is a break down of the cost of each item.

Bernard Jensen Rice Bran Syrup is around $13.00 for 16 oz.  (473 ml).  I give Emma 15 ml per day so it will last around 1 month.

Bernard Jensen Black Cherry Concentrate is around $16.00 for 16 oz. (473 ml). I give Emma 15 ml per day so it will last around 1 month.

Flax Seed Oil is around $17.00 for 16 oz.  I give Emma 5 ml per day so it will last close to 3 months.

Liquid C is $5.00 for 8 oz. (237 ml) and I give Emma 5 ml per day so it will last around 1 1/2 month.

Vitamin D is around $9.00 for .34 oz.  Emma gets 4 drops in her milk each day so it too will last me 3 months.

The Organic Valley Eggs run around $3.50 for a dozen so that breaks out to about $.29 per egg which equals $8.50 per month.

The Sambucus is between $10.00-$15.00 depending on where you get it.  I will split the difference to be fair so we will say $12.50 for 8 oz.  Emma gets 5 ml per day so it to will last about 1 1/2 month.

Black Seed Oil is $18.00 for 8 oz. but I only put a squirt of it in.  I am on my first bottle but it will probably last well into 6 months.

Children's DHA is $35.00 for 16 oz. and Emma gets about 5 ml of it every day so it will last a little over 3 months.

That puts our average monthly cost for this item at $53.00 plus the cost of the milk.  The milk would be an expense regardless.  I only took 1/3 of the cost of the Bernard Jensen products for sake of figuring the cost of this particular serving of milk.  Emmalin has 3 items in her diet that our essential and this is one of them.

But like I said before...this is what works for us.  Emma is currently 19 months old, 25 lbs and a little over 31 inches long.  She had her heart surgery at 3 1/2 months and we have battled thyroid problems since before her surgery.  Our little Down syndrome darlings tend to be so small and sickly.  Emma's success with her growth and her continued days of being healthy I attribute to her overall diet.  I have only taken Emma to the doctor two times for what I considered a "sickness" and it turned out to be the common cold.  There was not a fever associated with either time, I am just overly cautious this year with everything that is going around.  Also, please remember that I have been giving Emma some crazy mixtures all along so she does not mind all of this mixed together.  When she starts turning her nose up I will have to readjust, but it works for now.

I really want to take the time to thank some people that have greatly influenced me and who continue to guide me down a road that many physicians refuse to travel.  Dr. Julian Neil, Dr. Jane Miers, Dr. Steven Kahler and Robin Tolliver are incredibly kind souls who continually help me to do what is best for Emma.  They listen to my concerns and suggestions and I listen to their guidance.  They help me monitor her lab work and we adjust her diet accordingly.  Emma's diet will be changed over the course of time depending on what her body needs and I am confident in knowing that she is in great hands.  My daughter will be all that she can be with people like this in our lives.
